The organisers behind Swindon’s successful Festival of Tomorrow are extending an invitation to local schools and STEAM professionals for an innovative initiative set to revolutionize science communication in Swindon and Wiltshire.
In collaboration with Cheltenham Science Festival, the Festival of Tomorrow team is spearheading the first UK regional pilot of FameLab Academy, a science communication initiative designed exclusively for secondary school students. Serving as the schools’ counterpart to FameLab, the renowned international science communication competition, FameLab Academy aims to nurture Year 9 students into adept science communicators, enhancing their scientific knowledge and fostering confidence and communication skills.

Year 9 students, with guidance from their teachers and a STEAM Mentor from academia or industry, will craft a dynamic three-minute presentation elucidating a scientific topic of their choosing. The presentations will be delivered to a panel of judges in a compelling and engaging manner.
The winning student from each school will be rewarded with a Masterclass in science communication training, refining their performance for the Swindon and Wiltshire finals scheduled for March 2024.
Rod Hebden, Festival of Tomorrow Director, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We’re thrilled to introduce FameLab Academy to schools in Swindon and Wiltshire. Regardless of their interests, whether it’s art, programming, science, maths, or engineering, FameLab Academy provides all Year 9 students with an opportunity to shine. Having already inspired thousands of students in Gloucestershire, we are eager to witness the creativity and brilliance that Swindon and Wiltshire students will bring to the finals in March 2024.”
Participating schools will receive comprehensive resources, including FameLab Academy materials and science communication training for teachers. The organisers are actively seeking participation from local STEAM professionals willing to volunteer as mentors for schools involved in the initiative.
