A man has been handed a 16-week prison sentence following a prolonged rooftop stand-off that caused major disruption in Swindon last weekend.
Constantin Turcanu, aged 29 and of no fixed address, appeared before Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 28th May, where he admitted to intentionally and recklessly causing a public nuisance.
The incident unfolded on Sunday 25th May, when Turcanu climbed out of a window onto the roof of a building on Newhall Street at approximately 8.20am. Despite efforts from police and emergency services, he remained on the rooftop for most of the day, drawing the attention of residents and passers-by and prompting a significant police response.
Local Crime Investigator Greenaway, commenting after the hearing, said:
“Constantin Turcanu took up valuable police time as he put himself and the public in danger. Wasting police or other emergency services’ time – or misusing our services – is taken very seriously. The general public’s best interest is at the heart of our work every day, and I am pleased Turcanu has been held accountable.”
The court heard that alongside the eight-week sentence for the public nuisance offence, Turcanu was also sentenced to 12 weeks for breaching a previously suspended sentence. In addition, a community order was revoked, resulting in a total custodial term of 16 weeks, to be served concurrently.
The rooftop stand-off sparked frustration amongst local residents who were unable to access parts of the area throughout the day, while officers and support teams attempted to bring the situation to a safe resolution.
The incident has reignited concerns around individuals misusing emergency services and the impact it can have on public resources and community safety.
