Swindon Residents Slash Carbon Footprint with Record Solar Panel Uptake

Hundreds of households across Swindon have taken decisive steps towards a greener future, as the Council’s Solar Together scheme continues to gather momentum. Since the initiative’s launch in 2022, 602 Swindon homes have installed 6,074 solar panels, with a remarkable 91 per cent also opting for battery storage to make the most of their self-generated energy.

The combined efforts of these forward-thinking residents are expected to cut carbon emissions by an estimated 11,853 tonnes of CO₂ over the panels’ 25-year lifetime. Altogether, nearly £6 million has been invested locally in renewable energy – a strong statement of Swindon’s commitment to sustainability.

Interest shows no signs of waning, with over 440 households already registered for the latest round of the scheme, which closes for registrations on 8 August 2025. Delivered in partnership with Wiltshire Council and group-purchasing experts iChoosr, Solar Together offers residents an accessible, affordable route into solar energy by harnessing the collective buying power of the community.

Last year’s round saw participants secure a 39 per cent discount on average market prices for solar installations. Councillor Emma Bushell, Deputy Leader of Swindon Borough Council and Ambassador for a Greener Swindon, highlighted the benefits of the scheme: “Solar Together has already given hundreds of Swindon households the confidence to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, by securing solar panels at competitive prices. Installed solar panels can deliver energy to homes up to 20 times cheaper than grid energy, saving households hundreds of pounds each year. Their switch to renewables will achieve a reduction of nearly 12,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions over the panels’ lifetimes.”

Councillor Bushell encouraged residents to explore the opportunity: “With the latest 2025 Solar Together scheme open for registrations, I’d urge residents to consider if solar panels might be the right choice for them. The Solar Together website provides a wealth of information to support a well-informed decision, and registering is free, quick, and comes with no obligation.”

The scheme is open to homeowners, tenants with landlord permission, small and medium-sized businesses, and commonhold associations. Participants benefit from pre-approved installers, clear personal recommendations, and competitive pricing achieved through collective purchasing.
