Officers from the Stratton, Central Swindon North & West Swindon Neighbourhoods Policing team took to the streets at the weekend in a proactive effort to address rising concerns over vehicle security.
Their patrols revealed concerning statistics, with multiple cars found to be left insecure, around 7% of those checked.
The decision to publicise these findings aims to spark dialogue and awareness within the community about the importance of securing vehicles. Recent incidents of opportunistic thefts targeting vehicles have been on the rise, with reports indicating a concerning trend where successful attempts often lead to repeated targeting.
In response to this concerning pattern, Swindon Police have implemented a multifaceted approach to tackle vehicle-related crimes, including:
- Marked Targeted Patrols: Increasing police presence in areas prone to vehicle thefts.
- Crime Prevention Posts on Social Media: Sharing tips and advice on securing vehicles to raise awareness.
- Crime Prevention Letter Drops and Door Knocks: Engaging directly with residents to promote vigilance.
- Vehicle Checks for Insecurities: Identifying insecure vehicles and promptly notifying owners to secure them.
- Target Hardening Scans of Areas: Assessing vulnerable locations to implement preventive measures.
- Arrests of Suspects with Curfews on Bail: Taking swift action against perpetrators to deter further offences.
Despite these proactive measures, community involvement remains paramount in combatting vehicle-related crimes. Swindon Police urge all residents to ensure their vehicles are properly locked and alarmed at all times.
Additionally, they encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly to Wiltshire Police.
