Swindon is celebrating once more as a rising martial arts talent from the town has secured a silver medal on the national stage.
Fifteen-year-old Roman, a Year 10 pupil at Lawn Manor Academy, travelled to Wolverhampton to compete in the Junior Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships – returning home with a hard‑earned silver medal in the yellow belt division.
Roman has been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for six years, after being introduced to the sport by his father. Speaking after the event, Roman shared how his daily routine of training goes far beyond fitness alone.
“It’s something I practise every day,” he said. “It’s not just about being strong – you need to think ahead and keep a clear mind. It’s done a lot for my mental health too. Jiu Jitsu feels like a community, and I’ve met so many people and made friends all over the country through competitions.”
This isn’t Roman’s first taste of success. Earlier in the year, he captured gold at the Welsh Jiu Jitsu Open. His competitive calendar is far from over, with the Somerset Open in Weston‑super‑Mare next on his list as he continues to represent Swindon among the nation’s best young fighters.
Looking even further ahead, Roman hopes one day to test himself against the finest fighters worldwide at the prestigious IBJJF Brazilia and Pan Championships.
