I have been Member of Parliament for South Swindon since 2010.
Living locally here in South Swindon with my family and having my office on Wood Street enables me to be both visible and approachable (something all MPs should be). It also helps to fully ensure that I understand the issues that are important to us.
I hold regular advice surgeries for local residents across the town, and I am regularly out and about here in South Swindon attending local events and showing my support for our wonderful local charities, as well as visiting local businesses large and small.
My office receives hundreds of emails every day, and my team handles thousands of cases on behalf of local residents every year.
I have run many successful local campaigns, including my ongoing Laptops For Local Schools and Charities Campaign. Through this scheme, local residents and businesses have donated hundreds of laptops, which have been refurbished by local businesses, SP Computers, and Excalibur, and donated to students and local charities across the town.
I also run a joint local Campaign to Tackle Loneliness here in Swindon with Swindon Seniors Forum. Feeling lonely is something that any one of us can experience at any point and it can have a huge impact on our well-being. The aim of this campaign is to bring together key organisations, local charities, and businesses across Swindon to discuss the excellent work that is already taking place locally, as well as discussing what further can be done to tackle loneliness.
I also run a Local Business Support Campaign to promote the many excellent local businesses, large and small that we have here in Swindon and encourage fellow residents to also support and use them.
The future looks bright here in Swindon with a new state-of-the-art £21million Government funded Institute of Technology due to open soon, and over £100m of investment projects taking place in our town centre over the next three years as part of the regeneration, including the new £32m Bus Boulevard to deliver a new public transport interchange, £7m for the Kimmerfields development, significant investment in the Health Hydro and £5m for phase three of the Carriageworks. When it comes to Government funding, I will continue to work hard to ensure that we receive our fair share in Swindon.
My national work has included championing autism issues as a backbencher and as a Cabinet Minister. As Justice Secretary, I reformed sentencing to make it tougher for violent and sexual offenders and as Solicitor General, I successfully applied to increase the sentences of many serious criminals.
