South Swindon MP Sir Robert Buckland is ‘pleased’ that SevenCapital’s has finally been given the green light for its plans to refurbish the iconic Oasis Leisure Centre dome but has also warned ‘there is still a long way to go before the Oasis can be reopened.’
Thursday’s planning approval gave a glimmer of hope that the leisure centre could once again be reopened with Swindonians swimming under the dome as they were back on New Years’s Day 1976 when it officially opened.
“I am pleased that Swindon Borough Council has approved proposals to restore the dome of the Oasis Leisure Centre” he said.
“This is a positive step in the right direction. However, there is still a long way to go before the Oasis can be reopened.
“I will continue to work closely with local residents, the Save the Oasis Campaign Group, Swindon Borough Council, and Seven Capital, and do all I can to keep pushing for the reopening of our much-loved leisure centre.”
Closed since November 2020, the swimming pool and dome received Grade II listed status in December 2021 after an application from the local Save Oasis Swindon group.
Fingers crossed they have the centre open again for the 50th anniversary!
