Swindon motorists urged to get cars autumn-ready

With autumn closing in – shorter days, damp mornings and the odd leaf-strewn road – Volvo Cars Swindon is reminding drivers to make sure their vehicles are up to the task of keeping them safe.

Luke Rodriguez, based at the dealership on Great Western Hill, says the seasonal shift brings with it a few extra challenges.
“Car maintenance is important all year round,” he said, “but the cold and wet months of autumn bring a unique set of hazards. We’re already seeing the effects of stronger winds, heavier rain and falling temperatures – all of which put extra demands on cars.”

To help drivers prepare, Luke has shared his five top checks for autumn motoring:

Your Holiday Starts Now
  1. Wipers:
Worn or cracked blades won’t cope with autumn’s mix of rain and debris. If they’re smearing or skipping, replace them – ideally with heavy-duty versions designed for wet weather.

  2. Tyres:
Tread depth is crucial. While the legal minimum is 1.6mm, Luke recommends at least 3mm for better grip on slippery surfaces. The 20p coin test is a simple way to check.

  3. Fluids:
Coolant, washer fluid, oil and filters should all be checked. A winter-grade washer fluid will stop jets freezing, and a fresh cabin filter will help keep air clean inside the car.

  4. Brakes:
Listen out for squeaks or grinding. With wet roads and leaf litter making surfaces unpredictable, reliable brakes are a must.

  5. Free repairs:
Volvo is offering free windscreen and tyre damage repairs for any Volvo driver, regardless of the car’s age. A quick booking with a technician could save a small chip turning into a costly crack.

Luke added: “Taking a little time now to prepare your car will help ensure it remains safe and reliable, no matter what the autumn weather throws at it.”
