Officers conducted proactive checks at the landscaping company’s worksite in Wichelstowe, leading to the discovery that two workers lacked the proper authorisation to work in the UK. These workers were arrested and later released on bail by Immigration, with further safeguarding measures in place to ensure their safety.

The owner of the company and one other who were present were located and arrested for forced labour offences. The company has been issued with a civil penalty which will result in a fine of up to £40,000.

PC Gee, a member of the Swindon North, East, and rural neighbourhood Policing Team,

“By acting quickly on intelligence from our communities we were able to get out and make enquiries with the workers.

“Every check we do is important to safeguard people who may be subject to modern slavery and labour exploitation.

“On this occasion, through working with Immigration, we identified that the workers were working illegally with no valid paperwork.

“We will continue to monitor construction sites, building and landscaping companies to ensure that workers are not extorted and taken advantage of.”
