As we mark 100 days since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Swindonians are praised for stepping forwards to help those who remained in their homeland and also those forced to flee Ukraine.
To date around 550 tonnes of aid has been donated, sorted and delivered from Swindon to the Polish Ukrainian border with the help of Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership.
The local group, based at Phoenix Enterprises on the Elgin Industrial Estate plan to start utilising Ukraine haulage companies and drivers to deliver direct into Ukraine and get as close to the worst war zones in the east of the country.
The group will also continue supporting the growing number of refugee visitors to Swindon, providing assistance with benefit applications, finding school places for the children plus beds mattresses clothes and all various other items they will need to help them settle in the town.
Mike Bowden, co-chair of the aid partnership said “Ukranians are the most dignified resilient people you could wish to meet.
“The people have Swindon have stood up when called upon and their support has been amazing.
“There is a danger that the war in Ukraine gets pushed down the news agenda by celebrity nonsense such as Johnny Depp and his ex.
“The people of Ukraine need our support and kindness more than ever and after 100 days of fighting there is no sign of a cease fire anytime soon.”
