Swindon Hub Launches Appeal to Fix Broken Lift and Continue Community Support

Swindon’s Community Hub, a welcoming haven for residents, is appealing for help to repair its ageing lift. The Hub, a key local resource for activities, events, and social gatherings, has faced increasing challenges keeping the lift in good working order. Having already spent over £12,000 on repairs in just three years, the trustees have reached a difficult decision – they can no longer afford to maintain the lift and are now calling on the community to help fund its repair.

Since opening its doors in 2021, Swindon Hub has become a busy focal point for a range of activities, from workshops and training sessions to quiet spaces for reading and socialising. Over 20,000 visitors and more than 50 community groups have benefitted from the Hub’s facilities, which include a café and various social spaces on the ground floor. However, the larger events, the kitchen, and the toilets are all located upstairs, and with the lift now out of order, many people have been unable to access these areas.

Debbie, a regular visitor to the Hub, expressed her frustration: “The Hub is where I come to connect with people, but with the lift out of action, I can’t get to all the events I enjoy. It’s really disappointing.”

The Hub’s first-floor spaces are vital for larger events, such as music jams and theatre performances, as well as meetings that require a quieter atmosphere. Without the lift, many of these activities are now out of reach for those with mobility challenges.

Hub trustee Jol Rose explained: “The Hub is a place created by the community for the community. We really hope that local people will come together and support our crowdfunder so we can raise the £15,000 needed to get the lift working again. This will ensure it remains functional for at least the next five years.”

To assist with the cost of repairs, the Hub has launched an online crowdfunding appeal, aiming to raise £15,000 to fix the lift and ensure it can be maintained moving forward. Contributions can be made via the crowdfunding page at [link] or in person at the Hub café.

Swindon Hub, located at 36 The Parade, is a space for everyone, offering a warm, safe environment where people can come together, relax, and take part in community-driven events.
