A Swindon charity dedicated to supporting domestic abuse survivors has unveiled a significant transformation.
Formerly known as Swindon Women’s Aid, the organisation has rebranded as Society Without Abuse (SWA), reflecting its growing mission to prevent domestic abuse through education and intervention, as well as continuing to provide essential support to survivors.
For 50 years, the charity has been at the forefront of tackling domestic abuse in the town, offering refuge, advice, and vital assistance to those in need.
Now, with an expanded focus that incorporates a whole-family approach, SWA aims to create long-term societal change, equipping individuals and communities with the knowledge and tools to break cycles of abuse.
SWA’s specialist teams support survivors of abuse to recover and rebuild their lives, as well as empowering the next generation to build healthy relationships. They equip our wider community, including businesses and community groups, with the knowledge needed to effectively support those at risk and experiencing domestic abuse by removing the stigma and making people aware of where to go to receive help. Importantly, they work to prevent abuse happening in the future by supporting those who demonstrate unhealthy behaviour in relationships to change their outlook and way they behave.
With plans to extend their reach beyond Swindon, SWA Chair Nicky Alberry said: “We felt this was the right moment to assess what we have achieved over the past 50 years and shape a future that best serves our community. Our new name reflects the world we strive to create – one without abuse.”
Interim CEO Kate Rowland echoed this sentiment, adding: “This is a legacy that Swindon can be proud of. Our mission is clear – we want to build a society where abuse no longer exists. But we cannot do this alone; everyone has a role to play, from individuals to businesses and local authorities.”
The charity’s relaunch was marked by an event at its Survivor@SWA shop in The Parade, with the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Dame Sarah Troughton, in attendance. Praising the organisation’s dedication, she said: “Domestic abuse is a deeply complex issue, but by getting to the root cause, we can work towards a real solution. SWA’s expertise and compassionate approach make a true difference.”
SWA continues to offer support to those in need. If you or someone you know requires assistance, contact Swindon’s domestic abuse helpline on 01793 610610 or visit www.societywithoutabuse.org.uk.
