Swindon Council Launches Free Service to Support Residents with Council Tax Payments

Swindon Borough Council has introduced a new initiative aimed at helping residents who are struggling to pay their Council Tax.

The First Steps programme, run in partnership with Liberata, provides free, supportive, and non-judgemental advice to assist people in overcoming financial challenges that may affect their ability to meet payments.

The scheme not only aims to support residents in managing ongoing Council Tax payments but also offers assistance with resolving outstanding debts. By addressing issues early, First Steps aims to reduce the risk of debt recovery actions and the additional costs associated with enforcement agent visits.

First Steps will work with individuals to create manageable payment arrangements that fit their circumstances. Advisers can also provide guidance on the support available and make referrals to partner organisations, such as Citizens Advice.

The council is proactively identifying residents who may benefit from the scheme, reaching out directly through phone calls, letters, and emails. So far, more than 80 people have been contacted and offered help. However, anyone experiencing difficulties is encouraged to seek assistance themselves.

Councillor Kevin Small, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, shared his thoughts on the scheme: “We recognise that there are many in our communities struggling with financial pressures at the moment. Paying your Council Tax is just one of the challenges people face, and with this in mind, Swindon Borough Council has a dedicated team ready to help.

“Our approach is empathetic, personalised, and focuses on finding practical solutions. By working together, we aim to ease the pressure and help residents take control of their finances. I urge anyone in difficulty to contact the team as soon as possible.”

Residents can access the First Steps service by emailing Firststeps.Swindon@liberata.com or calling 01275 885082.
