Swindon Council and Great Western Hospital Open Career Paths for Local Students through New Work Experience Programme

Swindon Borough Council and Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have joined forces to deliver a hands-on work experience programme, offering Year 10 and 11 students a glimpse into a range of potential career paths. The initiative ran from 28th to 31st October, exposing students to various apprenticeship opportunities available within Swindon.

At Swindon Borough Council, students participated in interactive sessions led by representatives from diverse departments, including Operations, Learning and Development, Enterprise Works, and Public Health. Highlights included team-building exercises and a visit to the new Museum & Art Swindon at the Civic Offices. Great Western Hospital delivered equally engaging sessions, with students diving into areas like project management, digital services, marketing, and IT. Students also honed practical skills in CV writing and interview techniques, aimed at enhancing their employability and workplace confidence.

Throughout the programme, apprentices shared their journeys, offering relatable and inspiring insights. The initiative culminated with a closing presentation on 31 October at Great Western Hospital, attended by Councillor Emma Bushell, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Organisational Oversight. Students reflected on their experiences and received certificates of completion, acknowledging the skills gained and their enthusiasm for potential future careers.

The programme aligns with the Council’s Swindon Plan, which seeks to “Build a Fairer Swindon” by reducing disadvantage and enhancing young people’s access to education, skills, and employment. Councillor Emma Bushell expressed her enthusiasm: “It was inspiring to see the students’ engagement. By giving them practical experience, we’re not only supporting their personal growth but also contributing to the future of Swindon’s workforce. Initiatives like this reflect our commitment to a fairer Swindon, where everyone has the chance to thrive.”

Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One student commented, “This experience has motivated me to get good grades and consider working at the Council. It opened my mind to apprenticeships and volunteering.” Another student remarked, “I enjoyed meeting people whose job is to help others. Learning about careers I hadn’t considered before has made me eager to volunteer within the community.”

Sarah King, Wider Workforce Lead at Great Western Hospital, added: “Thank you to all the students who took part. They witnessed firsthand how professionals at every level contribute to our patients and community. We’re pleased to have inspired young people and hope they’ll consider us as a future employer.”

With ongoing commitment to developing such partnerships, Swindon Borough Council and Great Western Hospital are paving the way for the next generation, ensuring young people across Swindon have accessible pathways to success.
