Swindon corporate finance firm Watersheds plays key role in international cheesecake deal

Swindon-based corporate finance specialists Watersheds have played a central role in the international acquisition of one of Britain’s best-known dessert producers, The English Cheesecake Company.

The brand, long celebrated for its indulgent creations and cult following among UK shoppers, has been bought by the Emmi Group, strengthening the Swiss company’s growing portfolio in the premium desserts market. Emmi, whose Mademoiselle Desserts division already enjoys a strong foothold in the British food service sector, views the move as a natural extension of its ambitions within retail.

Founded as a family venture in 2000, The English Cheesecake Company has grown steadily, generating around £23 million in sales during the last financial year. Its handcrafted desserts – from traditional favourites to vegan recipes and frozen treats – are stocked by all major UK retailers. Their reputation for craft, consistency and flavour has secured a loyal following well beyond the supermarket aisle.

By bringing the company into its network, Emmi aims to expand the reach of a product that already taps into the global appetite for premium, indulgent desserts.
Didier Boudy, EVP of Emmi Desserts, said the deal supports the group’s wider strategy:
“This acquisition strengthens our presence in the fast-growing premium cheesecake segment and aligns with the global trend towards indulgent desserts. It helps us build on our strong international position while creating fresh synergies within the portfolio.”

The transaction was overseen by John Stopher, Partner at Watersheds, who guided the process from sourcing the opportunity through to completion.

Speaking after the announcement, he said:
“We’re pleased to have brought this deal together. After presenting a number of potential routes, we worked closely with the client to secure the most suitable acquisition to support their expansion across the UK.

“This is a clear example of how our expertise and network allow us to identify off-market prospects and deliver deals that genuinely fit a client’s long-term aims. There is considerable opportunity ahead for the combined teams, and we look forward to seeing that growth take shape.”
