Swindon Comes Together for Armed Forces Day Celebration at Lydiard Park

The sound of bagpipes echoed across Lydiard Park as residents gathered to celebrate Armed Forces Day and pay tribute to serving personnel, veterans, reservists and military families.

The event, held on the lawn in front of Lydiard House and organised by Swindon Borough Council, attracted families from across the borough for an afternoon of entertainment, displays and community activities.

Part of a nationwide programme of events, Armed Forces Day recognises the contribution made by members of the Armed Forces, both past and present, along with the families who support them.

Visitors were welcomed by the Mayor of Swindon, Councillor Neil Hopkins, and Councillor Leanne Stevenson, the council’s Armed Forces Champion.

Throughout the afternoon, crowds enjoyed a packed programme hosted by Swindon 105.5 presenter Shirley Ludford. Community organisations, military groups and local charities were among those represented, alongside a variety of family-friendly activities.

Among the attractions drawing attention was a Second World War-era Merryweather & Sons “Valiant” steam fire engine, brought to the event by local enthusiast Colin Hatch. A large military crane also proved a popular talking point among visitors.

One of the day’s standout moments came when members of the Gurkhas marched through the park led by a lone piper, creating a memorable spectacle for those gathered.

The event also featured military displays and interactive activities, including sessions led by Tim Howe from the Longevity Games.

This year’s celebration received support from the Ministry of Defence, with Swindon awarded £5,000 as part of a £430,000 funding package shared between local authorities and community groups across the country.

Councillor Stevenson said the day had highlighted the strong connection between Swindon and the Armed Forces community.

“Today has been very inspiring, where we’ve been surrounded by cadets, reservists, armed forces personnel from the RAF, the Army and the Royal Navy. Collectively, we’re here together as one big family,” she said.

“It’s been a fantastic day. Walking around you can see everyone smiling, there’s a really lovely atmosphere – a feeling of togetherness – which is wonderful.

“This event is all about celebrating our armed forces, their successes and the great sacrifices they make for all of us. Seeing such a strong turnout from local people today was incredibly uplifting.”

With sunshine, music, military traditions and strong community support, the event once again demonstrated the importance of recognising those who serve while bringing people together in one of Swindon’s most historic settings.
