Swindon Borough Council to Upgrade 19 Local Roads

A programme of essential resurfacing works improving roads across the Borough will begin next week.

From Monday 20 October, Swindon Borough Council will start repairs on 19 roads as part of its annual minor resurfacing programme, continuing through to early December.

The improvement work forms part of the Council’s wider major and minor road resurfacing programme, representing an investment of over £3.75 million to fix deteriorating road surfaces across Swindon.

In total, the Council will spend more than £5 million on road maintenance during the 2025/26 financial year, including £170,000 for reactive pothole repairs. The funding also covers patching works, refreshed road markings, and traffic signal maintenance.

Roads included in the resurfacing programme:

  • The entrance road to the Orbital Shopping Centre

  • Kingswood Avenue

  • Pewsham Road

  • Hay Lane

  • Wilcot Avenue

  • Beech Avenue

  • Shrivenham Road

To complete the work safely and efficiently, roads will be closed between 8am and 6pm during their scheduled repair periods, except at the Orbital Shopping Centre, where overnight works (8pm–6am) will take place. Access will be maintained for residents, with signed diversions for other road users.

Residents and businesses affected by the works have been notified in advance by letter.

Councillor Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said:

“I’m pleased this programme will continue our work to tackle Swindon’s backlog of road repairs.

This progress is only possible thanks to the additional funding we received from central government earlier this year. But we know there’s still more to do.

Our teams have already delivered excellent results this year, and we’re on track to complete more repairs on our highways than we did in 2024/25.

And we’re not stopping here — we’re already planning the next phase of works, with more details to be shared in 2026.”

The latest resurfacing programme builds on the thousands of road repairs already completed by Swindon Borough Council in 2025.
