Swindon has more than 50 households willing to host refugees as they flee Ukraine.
It is understood a total of 131 Ukrainian refugees have been matched to sponsors throughout Swindon through the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme.
Swindon Borough Council’s Warm Welcome team is on hand to provide ongoing support to hosts and their Ukrainian guests as they arrive in.
This will include liaising with host families to ensure they are registering their visitors with local GPs and carrying out home inspections to ensure they are safe and suitable.
Staff will also complete enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks on all adults in the host household to make sure refugees are coming into a safe environment.
The Council’s Live Well team is also working closely with local groups to store and sort donations of clothes and essential items for people arriving from Ukraine as well as setting up a network of community access points and events.
A dedicated webpage has also been set up which provides the latest information on the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ programme and the support that will be provided to Ukraine refugees and their host families.
