Swindon Bakery Releases Limited Edition Doughnut to Honour ‘Doughnut Dollies’

This November, Swindon-based bakery Pipp & Co is rolling out a special, limited-edition doughnut in tribute to the wartime “Doughnut Dollies” of the Salvation Army. Known for bringing comfort and morale to Allied soldiers during the First World War, these volunteers have inspired Pipp & Co to release a cinnamon ring doughnut, dusted with cardamom sugar, as a nod to the original “doughnuts” made under wartime constraints.

The limited-edition doughnut will be available from 5th to 17th November, covering the period around Remembrance Sunday. As part of the launch, Pipp & Co will also donate £500 to the Salvation Army in support of its ongoing work, including services provided at Gloucester House in Highworth, which aids those overcoming substance abuse.

The story of the Doughnut Dollies is one of resourcefulness and dedication. In 1917, with the United States newly involved in the conflict, Salvation Army leader Evangeline Booth proposed sending volunteers to France. There, these brave women rolled out dough using makeshift tools like empty wine bottles to provide soldiers with a familiar taste of home, despite being far from it. The pastries they made weren’t the doughnuts we know today but simple fried dough rings, made under harsh conditions to boost the troops’ spirits.

“We were so inspired when we heard the story of the Doughnut Dollies that we immediately wanted to create a new doughnut as a tribute,” explained Betina Evangelista, co-founder of Pipp & Co. “The Salvation Army is still doing great work today, so we’re very happy to support our local branch.”

Pipp & Co prides itself on its artisan approach to baking, with a commitment to using no artificial additives, flavourings, or preservatives. All their goods are freshly prepared in Swindon, available online, through their café in Bristol, or at farmers’ markets and retail outlets. This simple yet poignant doughnut reflects the heart of their mission: quality ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and a deep respect for tradition.
