84 councils out of 114, including Swindon Borough Council, who provide social care and have published their 2023/24 budget proposals plan to raise council tax by 5%.
Thais rise would increase bills by around £100 a year for the average property in Band D.
Local authorities would normally need to hold a local referendum if they want to increase council tax by more than 3%, but Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced in his autumn statement he will raise this to 5%.
According to Treasury analysis, it is expected around 95% of councils are expected to hike payments by the full 5% permitted over the next five years.
Council tax, which makes up around 22% of Swindon Borough Council’s total income, is used to fund local government services such as rubbish collection, street lighting, and public transportation. It is based on the value of a property and is paid by the occupants of the property, whether they are homeowners or tenants.
The Council Tax bill is made up of a number of charges from different public organisations, including Swindon Borough Council, Parish councils, the police and the fire service.
