Summer Fayre at Willowbrook View Brings Smiles, Sunshine and Support for Prospect Hospice

It’s not often you see tin can alleys, candy floss and giant Jenga sharing the same postcode as a luxury care home, but that’s exactly what happened when Willowbrook View in Wichelstowe opened its gardens for its annual Summer Fayre.

The event wasn’t just about ice cream and fairground games though – it was about bringing together residents, families, neighbours and, most importantly, several generations of the local community, all while raising money for Prospect Hospice. By the end of the day, the Fayre had collected just over £250 for the Swindon charity, a cause close to the hearts of both staff and residents.

Guests were treated to face painting, craft stalls, hook-a-duck, a raffle and plenty of sugary treats. The atmosphere was light and relaxed, and for many it was the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Anna, whose mother is a resident at Willowbrook View, said:
“We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and it was great to see the little ones having so much fun too. Mum had a wonderful afternoon surrounded by her family, and you did a great job of having something going on to keep all ages entertained. Thank you for a fab day!”

The importance of bringing young and old together is something Willowbrook View takes seriously. Research shows intergenerational activities can reduce loneliness and boost wellbeing in care homes, while younger visitors gain empathy and a sense of connection. Willowbrook already runs a shared garden project with a nearby school, alongside storytelling, craft clubs and regular visits from local pupils.

Reflecting on the Fayre, General Manager Jane Edwards said:
“The Summer Fayre was a fantastic opportunity to bring our residents, their families, and local people together. We were particularly delighted to have so many energetic youngsters join the fun. Having children running around really brought new life to the home.”

Events and Activities Lead, Emily Locke, agreed:
“When different generations come together, there’s an energy that lifts everyone. Our residents love sharing their stories and humour with younger people – those small moments often turn into lasting bonds.”

With the laughter of children mixing with the chatter of residents and the smell of popcorn drifting across the garden, Willowbrook’s Summer Fayre proved that sometimes the simplest things – a game, a sweet treat, a conversation – are the ones that stay with us.
