Springfields Academy hailed among country’s best with top Ofsted recognition

The Springfields Academy has been recognised as one of the country’s leading specialist schools after receiving three of Ofsted’s highest possible ‘Exceptional’ ratings.

Inspectors described the Calne school as delivering “life-changing outcomes” for autistic pupils and children with additional needs, adding that the impact on pupils’ experiences and achievements was “truly transformative”.

The inspection took place in April under Ofsted’s new report card framework, which replaces the previous single overall judgement with ratings across several areas. The highest grade, Exceptional, is reserved for practice considered among the very best nationally.

Springfields achieved Exceptional ratings for Inclusion, Leadership and Governance, and Personal Development and Wellbeing. Every other area inspected was judged to be at a Strong Standard, indicating consistently high-quality provision above expected levels.

Inspectors praised the school’s inclusive ethos, saying leaders and staff “work tirelessly to identify and remove” barriers to learning so that every pupil has the opportunity to succeed.

The report also highlighted the school’s close relationships with families and the wider community, noting that its culture “ensures that pupils can flourish”.

Leadership received particular praise, with inspectors describing the work of senior leaders as having led to “life-changing outcomes for pupils”.

The report also recognised the school’s influence beyond Wiltshire, stating: “Children and families across the country and beyond benefit from the competence rooted in this school.”

Inspectors added that the academy’s expertise extends “far beyond its own walls”, supporting schools and organisations internationally while helping to develop future teachers.

Personal development was another standout feature, with Ofsted praising the school’s unwavering commitment to preparing pupils for adulthood.

Inspectors highlighted the carefully planned programmes that help young people develop confidence, independence and resilience, alongside a wide range of enrichment opportunities including residential visits, clubs and leadership activities.

Achievement was recognised as a Strong Standard, with the report noting that pupils make excellent progress through highly personalised learning programmes tailored to their individual needs.

Teaching was also praised for its consistent routines, clear modelling and carefully adapted support, while behaviour and attendance were highlighted as strengths.

Inspectors noted that many pupils arrive after difficult experiences in previous educational settings but quickly develop confidence, enjoy coming to school and establish positive attitudes towards learning.

Among the report’s key findings were:

  • “The school’s motto, ‘building safe independent lives’, is more than words. It is the driving force behind everything leaders and staff do.”
  • “Pupils gain the skills, confidence and resilience they need to flourish in modern Britain.”
  • “A deep culture of belonging ensures pupils feel motivated and eager to attend school regularly.”
  • “Meaningful relationships lie at the heart of the school’s commitment to provide pupils with the help they need to progress and thrive.”
  • “Pupils achieve very well from their differing starting points.”

The latest inspection follows another significant accolade for the academy, which last year was re-accredited with the National Autistic Society’s Advanced Specialist Award for a second time, a distinction achieved by very few schools.

Headteacher Nicola Whitcombe said the report reflected the dedication of the entire school community.

“We are incredibly proud of our pupils, staff and families, whose dedication and care make Springfields such a special place. The recognition from Ofsted reflects the work that happens here every day, supporting young people to grow in confidence, develop independence and achieve outcomes that genuinely transform their futures. It is a privilege to see the difference this makes for our pupils.”

Tom Leverage, Chief Executive of Reach South Academy Trust, said the inspection recognised not only the school’s outstanding work with pupils but also its wider contribution to specialist education.

“This is a fantastic recognition of The Springfields Academy and the exceptional work taking place across the school. The Ofsted report highlights the strength of leadership, the quality of provision and the transformative impact being achieved for pupils with additional needs.

“Importantly, it also recognises the school’s role in sharing its expertise and practice more widely, supporting schools not only across the Trust and nationally, but also increasingly worldwide. We are incredibly proud of the team and the contribution they are making to wider specialist education.”
