Sir Robert Buckland has been chosen to run again for the Conservative party in the next general election for the South Swindon constituency he currently holds.
This announcement quashes some speculation that he might seek to move on to the new East Wiltshire constituency that is expected to be announced in June when the Boundary Commission for England confirms plans to redraw boundaries to equal up the size of constituencies to between 70,000 and 77,000 voters.
One of the proposed changes would see South Swindon lose Wanborough, Wroughton, and Chiseldon whilst to the new constituency and Justin Tomlinson’s North Swindon constituency would also lose Covingham and Nythe to South Swindon.
The boundary review would increase the number of MP’s representing Swindon and Wiltshire in the House of Commons from seven to eight.
Announcing the news on Twitter he said “Great to be selected once again as @Conservatives candidate for #Swindon South – living here and working in the community for years – proud to represent such an amazing town with @JustinTomlinson.”
Sir Robert has represented South Swindon since 2010 and in the last general election, in 2019, took 52.3% of the votes compared to Labour’s Sarah Church who came second with 39.2%.
While Sir Robert holds a 6,625 vote majority, his seat is a target for Labour at the next election.
