Sir Robert Buckland MP Leads Initiative to Boost Employment Support for Autistic Individuals

Sir Robert Buckland MP has spearheaded a government review aimed at revolutionising employment opportunities for autistic individuals. Published this week, the Buckland Review of Autism Employment presents a comprehensive set of recommendations aimed at fostering a more inclusive workplace environment.

Despite the majority of autistic individuals expressing a desire to work, statistics from the Department for Work and Pensions reveal that only around 30 percent are currently employed. This disparity underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to address stigma and improve understanding of the unique needs of autistic employees.

Commissioned by Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Mel Stride, the review, led by Sir Robert, outlines 19 key recommendations designed to empower autistic individuals to enter, thrive, and progress in the workforce. These recommendations encompass various aspects of workplace culture and practices, including recruitment, training, and workplace design.

Key recommendations include encouraging employers to sign up for the Autistica Neurodiversity Employers Index, providing tailored training for autistic staff, and developing autism-friendly recruitment processes. Additionally, the review advocates for the creation of autism design guides to ensure workplace premises are conducive to the needs of autistic employees.

The Buckland Review of Autism Employment, developed in collaboration with the charity Autistica and informed by input from employers and autistic individuals, stresses the importance of concerted efforts from both businesses and the government to effect lasting change. Over the next five years, initiatives such as showcasing success stories of autism employment and implementing pilot programs in companies will be instrumental in driving progress.

Talking about the review, Sir Robert commented, “This review represents a significant step towards transforming the lives of autistic individuals and their families. I urge employers and government to embrace these recommendations and work together to enact meaningful change.”

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Mel Stride MP echoed this sentiment, emphasising the need for collaborative action to create a more inclusive workforce. The review aligns with the government’s broader strategy to enhance employment opportunities for disabled individuals, building on initiatives such as the Access to Work programme and the Back to Work Plan.
