Secondary School Students Empower Themselves Through Podcast Creation

Students from Royal Wootton Bassett Academy have delved into the world of podcast creation, exploring the critical topic of recognising and addressing unhealthy relationships.

The initiative welcomed Mark and Steve from Collaborate Digital, who facilitated an engaging session highlighting the significance of identifying abusive behaviors and seeking support when needed.

The workshop began with students collaboratively mapping out their ideas regarding what constitutes an unhealthy relationship. Through lively discussions and group activities, they gained insights into the various forms such relationships can take. Following this, students were given the opportunity to choose a specific topic within this domain to focus their podcasts on.

Venturing into the recording studio, students transformed their ideas into powerful audio narratives. The podcast creation process not only enhanced their communication skills but also provided a platform to share valuable insights with their peers.

David Storey, Associate Leadership Team Member at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy, expressed enthusiasm for this innovative approach to address a crucial topic. He remarked, “Following three whole year group assemblies, the podcast workshops were an innovative way to learn and speak about such an important topic.

“Unhealthy relationships can take many forms, and it is so important that students are able to spot the signs. This supports the work that we already do in school fabulously. We are extremely grateful to Mark and Steve for taking the time to visit.”

Recognising that unhealthy relationships can manifest in diverse ways, the podcast project contributes to the school’s broader efforts to educate and empower students. Beyond traditional teaching methods, this hands-on experience allows students to engage with the topic in a creative and meaningful way.
