Sir Robert Buckland MP has welcomed the announcement of a £115,460 investment to enhance energy efficiency at the Link Centre in South Swindon. This allocation, part of the Swimming Pool Support Fund, signifies a concerted effort by the Conservative Government to bolster community health and wellbeing through strategic investments.
Swimming stands as an accessible and enjoyable avenue for individuals to reap the myriad benefits associated with physical and mental exercise. Recognising this, the Conservative Government has earmarked over £60 million for the enhancement of 325 swimming pools nationwide, with the aim of fostering greater accessibility to this beneficial form of physical activity.
The investment at the Link Centre is just a small part of the government’s commitment to its ambitious goal of getting 3.5 million more people active by 2030. This targeted approach aligns with the Chief Medical Officer’s recommendations of 150 minutes of weekly exercise for adults and 60 minutes daily for young people, thereby promoting healthier lifestyles across the population.
The funds will be allocated towards implementing energy-efficient measures at the Link Centre, including the installation of Photo Voltaic (PV) panels and the replacement of fluorescent lighting with LED alternatives. These initiatives not only mitigate environmental impact but also alleviate financial strain by reducing operational costs, thereby ensuring the sustained provision of vital community services.
Sir Robert Buckland MP expressed his delight at the investment, stating, “The Link Centre in South Swindon is a magnificent asset, providing individuals of all ages and abilities with access to the physical and mental benefits of exercise. This significant investment from the Conservative Government will enhance the centre’s energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and extend the opportunity for more individuals to engage in swimming activities while minimising our environmental footprint.”
Sports Minister Stuart Andrew reaffirmed the government’s dedication to promoting active living, asserting, “Active people are fitter, happier, and healthier. This additional £60 million support underscores our commitment to ensuring that swimming pools remain financially sustainable, thereby safeguarding their pivotal role in community wellbeing.”
