The largest pro-European organisation in the UK, The European Movement, staged a ‘Rally for Rejoin’ in the town centre at the weekend, urging support the campaign for Britain to rejoin the European Union.
The national day of activities, which saw dozens of events take place both around the Uk and abroad, was organised by National Rejoin March (NRM) the direct-action group set up to put Rejoin on the agenda.
Announcing the weekend of events, Peter Corr founder of National Rejoin March said “we want people to have fun and talk about the EU and all the positive benefits that will come from Re-joining. Only positive, truthful campaigning will win.”
The Swindon event raised £45 in donations from the passing public with the group saying they ‘had people disco dancing in the street’ between speeches from local groups including Extinction Rebellion, Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership and one lady who said she’d never been political, but felt she had to speak about how Brexit has severely curtailed her daughter’s opportunities.
Organisers hope to have spread the message throughout Swindon by handing out leaflets, stickers and little EU flags to passers-by. They would also like to thank the members of Stroud for Europe and West Berkshire for Europe coming to Swindon to show their support at the event.
The European Movement was set up as they believe Brexit was a ‘historic, national mistake’ with the UK’s economic and political interests best achieved through the UK being a member of the European Union.
The group have 16,000 members with a reported 200,000 campaign supporters.
Other events were held in Barcelona, Bath, Bolton, Bournemouth, Cambridge, Cheltenham, Derby, Dover, Dorchester, Dumfries, Edinburgh, Exeter, Granada, Guildford, Hereford, Leeds, Leek, Lewes, Liverpool, London (3 events), Maidstone, Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, Palma, Reading, Salisbury, Sheffield, Swansea, Truro and York.
