Longleat House, nestled in the heart of Wiltshire, was still under construction when the Queen first visited in 1574 as part of her legendary summer progresses. The house, being built by Sir John Thynne, who had previously served as comptroller of Elizabeth’s household during her years as a princess, became a must-see for the monarch. Despite initial reluctance from Sir John, the visit was a resounding success, leaving a lasting legacy at the estate, which is now home to the 8th Marquess of Bath.

Curator Dr James Ford reflected on the historic moment: “The Great Hall is Longleat’s only surviving Elizabethan interior and would have been the focal point of celebrations during the Queen’s visit here exactly 450 years ago. It’s been fun to welcome ‘Her Majesty’ back for the anniversary of this important day.”

The current exhibition at Longleat, which commemorates this significant anniversary, showcases original documents linked to Elizabeth I’s visit, including a letter bearing her signature from her time as a princess. Visitors to the exhibition, which runs until 3rd November, can also marvel at the elaborate costumes worn by Dame Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett, and Anita Dobson in their iconic portrayals of Elizabeth I on screen.

Adding to the historic celebration, this year’s Festival of Light at Longleat will feature Queen Elizabeth I as one of the many lanterns, with the event themed around a ‘Journey through Time.’ The festival promises to be a spectacular tribute to the past, blending history and light in a way only Longleat can deliver.

For those wishing to immerse themselves in this unique historical experience, tickets for the exhibition and The Festival of Light are available at longleat.co.uk.
