Pupils and staff from Red Oaks Primary School will be pedalling 320 miles—the equivalent distance from Swindon to Paris—in a thrilling race against Orchid Vale School ahead of the Olympic Games opening ceremony in the French capital.
Starting on 8th July, the event is expected to span a week, with Year 5 and Year 6 students, plus staff at both schools, taking turns on exercise bikes to clock up the miles as they compete to be the first to the virtual finish line in Paris.
The schools are raising money to enhance Modern Foreign Language (MFL) resources, in preparation for the inaugural TPAT primary trip to Paris in November. Parents and families will sponsor the racers, aiming to raise as much money as possible.
Emily Maxfield, Head Teacher at Red Oaks Primary School, stated: “At TPAT, we believe every child should have a wide range of experiences to help them broaden their horizons and extend their understanding of the wider world. By fundraising, we can buy more resources to support children in learning new languages and then put this into the real-life context of a trip to another country for our Upper Key Stage 2 pupils later this year.”
Ruth Lee, Head Teacher at Orchid Vale Primary School, added: “There’s a keen competitive spirit that will hopefully get us over the line first. This is a fun way to raise awareness of the Olympics and sport, but also combined with a goal of raising money for more resources for the school. We’re doing this to help pupils learn more about European languages.”
