Police Appeal for Witnesses After Knife Threat in Online Marketplace Scam

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was threatened with a knife during an online marketplace transaction in Swindon.

The incident occurred on 3rd January between 5pm and 6pm in Chives Way. The victim had arranged to purchase a coat through an online listing and met the seller in person. However, after handing over the agreed cash, the suspect refused to provide the coat and instead threatened the victim with a knife.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on bail while enquiries continue. Officers are urging anyone who may have witnessed the exchange or has Ring Doorbell footage from the area to get in touch by calling 101 and quoting reference 54250000931.

A police spokesperson has also issued a warning about the risks of using unregulated online marketplaces.

“These platforms are often exploited by criminals and rogue traders looking to scam or take advantage of unsuspecting buyers,” they said. “We encourage the public to remain vigilant and take extra precautions when making purchases.”

Police have provided the following safety advice for those using private online marketplaces:

  • Be cautious of new or blank accounts, especially if they lack reviews or have received negative feedback.
  • If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Sellers refusing secure payment methods, such as bank transfers, may have ulterior motives.
  • Always arrange to meet in a public place to avoid potentially dangerous situations.

Anyone with concerns or information is encouraged to contact police via 101.
