Plans for £700m redevelopment of Honda plant approved

The former Honda site has a rich history, having been a major employer in the area for many years. At its peak, the Honda factory employed 5,000 people, making it one of the largest employers in the region.

However, in 2019, the Japanese car manufacturer announced that it was closing the Swindon factory, which had been in operation since 1985, as part of a wider restructuring plan.

Since then, the future of the site has been uncertain, with many locals concerned about the loss of jobs and the impact on the local economy. However, there is now cause for optimism, as plans for a £700 million redevelopment of the site have been approved, voted in by 12 votes to one abstention in favour of the redevelopment.

The developer behind the project, Panattoni, plans to build ten industrial or warehouse buildings on the site.

This development is expected to add a value of £295 million each year, or £1.2 billion over the first decade, to the local economy. What’s more, the development is set to create 7,000 jobs on the site, as well as an additional 5,000 spin-off jobs.

This redevelopment represents a significant investment in the area, and is a welcome boost for the local economy.

While the closure of the Honda factory was undoubtedly a blow for the community, this new development offers hope for the future, and demonstrates the resilience and adaptability of the local Swindon workforce.
