Plan to turn Swindon’s Casbah nightclub into flats approved

Plans to turn a long-running nightclub in John Street into flats have been approved by the Swindon Borough Council planning department.

The Casbah opened in the town centre in 2002 and was seen as  staple of the town centre nightlife scene until it closed its doors for good in March after the owners were unable to renegotiate a new lease with the landlords of the building.

The rest of the site will be made up of 12 one-bedroom flats/studio, 11 two-bedroom flats and one three-bedroom flat.

In the planning application the developers propose to make the new block of flats taller than the existing building but no taller then the Wilko store in The Parade “the proposed height of the building is less than the adjacent Wilko store, but taller that the abutting building”

” It is hoped that by going a bit higher it will help set a trend that would rejuvenate or reverse the decline in the area”
