Photo ID required for voting at polling stations on 4 May 2023

Elections are taking place across the Swindon Borough on 4th May, and due to a change in law, you’ll now need to bring an accepted form of photo ID to vote at a polling station.

As part of the Government’s commitment to updating security protections around identity at the polls it has introduced a requirement for voters to prove their identity at the polling station.

All registered voters who are eligible to vote in the local elections will receive a new-look poll card, which will be in the form of an enveloped letter and addressed to the individual person, at the end of March/early April.

Your Holiday Starts Now

Accepted forms of photo ID include passports, driving licences, blue badges and some concessionary travel passes – it doesn’t matter if your ID has expired, as long as the picture still looks like you and the name matches the one you’ve registered to vote with.

Residents who would like to vote by post will not require photo ID. Residents should apply now for a postal vote to ensure their application is processed early and issued as quickly as possible. You must be registered to vote – and it’s easy to apply.

If you don’t have an accepted form of ID, then you can apply for the free Voter Authority Certificate – you’ll need to do this by 25th April.
