Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for authorised and will be rolled out from next week

Boris Johnson has this morning confirmed the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has been authorised by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and will start to be delivered from next week

A UK Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson also said in a statement: “The Government has today accepted the recommendation from the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve Pfizer-BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine for use.”

The vaccine has been shown in studies to be 95% effective and works in all age groups.

The UK has already ordered 40 million doses – enough to vaccinate 20 million people.

Around 10 million doses should be available soon, with the first 800,000 arriving in the UK in the coming days.

Immunisations could start within days with care home residents, health and care staff, the elderly and the clinically extremely vulnerable receiving the vaccine on priority basis.
