Data released by the Office for National Statistics show that the cost to the UK Government in paying furloughed workers wages during pandemic topped £69billion.
When the cost of the grants paid to self-employed workers are included the costs rise a further £28Billion to £97Billion.
The furlough job support scheme paid up to 80% of a full-time wage to people whose workplaces were closed during the pandemic.
It is reported that during the pandemic, nearly 12 million jobs were being funded by the Government and at the time of the scheme ending on September 30th there were still around 1 million people registered for furlough.
