A Swindon man has been disqualified from driving for 17 months after failing to provide a breath test.
Manuel Sousa, 44, of Silverton Road, Park North, appeared before Swindon Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 12th June, where he received the disqualification and a fine of £1,699.
The incident that led to Sousa’s court appearance occurred on 28th May. Two police officers noticed Sousa’s car swerving across the road, frequently crossing the centre line, and narrowly avoiding collisions with oncoming vehicles. Upon stopping the vehicle, officers detected a strong smell of alcohol and noted that Sousa’s speech was slurred. Despite several attempts, Sousa failed to provide a suitable breath sample at the roadside.
Sousa was subsequently taken to Gablecross police station, where he again failed to provide the required samples of breath.
PC Paul Davis commented on the dangers of driving under the influence: “The biggest risk you take when driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is the risk of causing a collision. Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous and can lead to risk-taking behaviour, which puts your life and the lives of others in danger. Our message to people is clear: don’t risk it. Plan your journey home if you intend to drink.”
If you suspect someone of drink driving, you are encouraged to report it.
