The parish council of South Swindon has set its sights on rejuvenating Buckhurst Field with an ambitious improvement programme.
Spearheading the project is the refurbishment of the play area, with plans for further enhancements to sport and recreation facilities across the site.
Among the proposed upgrades are the reconstruction of the skate park, improvements to sports facilities and pitches, comprehensive landscaping, and the development of a new cycling and walking route. The investment required for these enhancements is estimated to surpass £600,000.
“Our goal is to transform Buckhurst Field into a vibrant hub for recreation, exercise, and community engagement,” remarked a council spokesperson. “We aim to create an accessible space that fosters activity and brings people together.”
To gather feedback and share their vision with residents, the parish council, in collaboration with Swindon Borough Council, will host a public drop-in session on Thursday, March 14th, from 3:30pm to 6:30pm at Buckhurst Community Centre, Burghley Close, SN3 3BS.
One of the key components of the proposed improvements is the construction of a new walking and cycle path encircling Buckhurst Field. This initiative aims to provide a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians, connecting existing paths from Dorcan Way to Queens Drive.
Collaboration is at the heart of this project, with the involvement of Swindon Borough Council, the Football Foundation, and other organisations. Notably, Robins FC, a junior football club, is poised to make Buckhurst Field its permanent home upon completion of the enhancements.
Work on the play area is scheduled to commence in early April and is expected to last approximately 3-4 weeks. Updates regarding the progress of other facilities will be provided in due course.
Residents and users of the local cycling and walking network are encouraged to share their thoughts on the proposed cycle and pedestrian path before the deadline on Friday, April 26, 2024. Feedback can be submitted via email to transportplanning@swindon.gov.uk.
