Wiltshire Police has confirmed that more than 100 vehicles were stopped in a major road safety and crime prevention operation in Swindon earlier this month, with five people arrested and several vehicles seized.
The crackdown, held on 5 September, targeted what officers call the “Fatal Five” – the most common causes of serious collisions on UK roads: speeding, drink or drug driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, using a mobile phone behind the wheel, and careless or dangerous driving.
In total, 103 motorists were dealt with. Among them, 71 were caught speeding, including one driver recorded at 71mph in a 40mph zone. A further 32 vehicles were stopped for offences ranging from no tax, insurance or MOT, to red-light jumping, insecure loads and driving vehicles deemed to be in dangerous condition.
Five people were arrested during the operation, including:
Two suspected drug drivers, both released on bail.
One individual held on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. Following a search, the suspect was also bailed while enquiries continue.
One person wanted in connection with a domestic abuse offence from another force area.
Officers also recovered a stolen vehicle and seized five others linked to uninsured driving or other offences.
Sergeant Will Ayres from Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit said the aim of the operation was not just to catch offenders but to prevent tragedies:
“Our officers are out every day tackling the driving behaviours most likely to cause serious harm or death. The Fatal Five aren’t just rules – they’re lifesavers. Yet we still hear excuses from drivers caught drink or drug driving, speeding, or using their phones. Many simply didn’t think they’d get stopped. But we’re here, and we’re watching.”
He also spoke about the human impact of road deaths:
“Knocking on a door to tell someone their loved one has died is the hardest part of this job. The moment they see a police officer, you can see the fear and heartbreak before a word is spoken. It’s a moment that changes lives forever.”
Police are urging all motorists to think twice before taking risks, reminding the public that every decision behind the wheel carries consequences not just for drivers, but for passengers, pedestrians and other road users.
Anyone with concerns about dangerous driving or criminal use of the roads is urged to report it. In an emergency call 999, or visit the Wiltshire Police website to report online. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
