The UK retail sector faced a challenging year in 2023, marked by nearly 120,000 job losses and the closure of over 10,000 shops, according to data from the Centre for Retail Research.
The demise of Wilko, saw 12,000 people lose their jobs when it collapsed. Flooring Direct and Tile Giant were also another two national names that were also forced into closure.

The figures underscore the significant impact of various factors, including rising living costs, energy expenses, and increasing rental costs, on the industry’s stability.
Paddy Lillis, general secretary of shop workers’ union Usdaw, expressed concern over the dire situation and emphasised the need for collaborative efforts to address the issues at hand. Lillis commented, “We have long called for the government to work with Usdaw and retailers to develop an industrial strategy and recovery plan for retail.”
He highlighted substantial issues such as rents, rates, and taxation that demand attention.
Lillis stated, “The scale of the challenge the industry faces is huge, with very high numbers of job losses and store closures that are scarring our high streets and communities.” The call for an industrial strategy underscores the urgency of devising comprehensive measures to revive the retail sector, considering the multifaceted challenges it currently confronts.
