As the festive season begins to take hold in Swindon, the return of Operation Dasher promises to keep shoppers, businesses, and visitors safe across the town centre and out-of-town retail areas.
Launching on Saturday 23rd November, this high-visibility neighbourhood policing operation is set to run throughout the busy Christmas period. With an increased number of people heading out to shop and enjoy the holiday atmosphere, there is often a corresponding rise in crime and anti-social behaviour. Operation Dasher has been introduced to combat these risks and provide reassurance to the community.
The operation will see officers patrolling busy shopping locations, ensuring the safety of the public and supporting local businesses as they stay open for extended hours during the festive season. Swindon’s Community Street Wardens, the borough council’s CCTV operators, Pubwatch, and store security staff will all be working alongside the police to enhance security and create a visible presence in high-traffic areas.
Sergeant Claire Davidson from the Swindon Central South Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) explained: “We’ve teamed up with key partners to ensure that neither businesses nor the public are affected by criminal behaviour or anti-social actions this Christmas. Our goal is for everyone in Swindon to feel safe, whether they’re shopping, working, or simply enjoying the festive season.”
PC Paul Bezzant, also from the Central South NPT, echoed these sentiments, adding: “The festive period is often a time when criminals and anti-social behaviour thrive, but we’re here to stop that. We want Swindon to be a place where everyone feels secure, and this operation is designed to help us achieve that. With the support of our community partners, we can keep Swindon a safe space for everyone.”
Operation Dasher is also aimed at educating the public on how to protect themselves during this busy time. Police have issued the following crime prevention tips for when you’re out shopping:
- Keep your purse or handbag close and never leave it unattended in a trolley
- Minimise the amount of cash you carry
- Secure your phone and wallet and keep them out of sight
- Always shield your PIN when using cash machines or paying by card
In addition, with increased car park activity during Christmas shopping, drivers are advised to take extra precautions to avoid theft:
- Never leave valuables or presents visible in your car
- Place items in the boot and ensure your vehicle is properly locked
- Remove any gadgets like Satnavs and wipe suction marks from windows
- If you own a van, remove tools overnight or display a sign to deter thieves
Police also remind the public to report any suspicious behaviour. If you are a victim of crime, or if you see anything concerning, you can contact the police on 101 or in an emergency, call 999. Alternatively, Crimestoppers offers a confidential way to report information on 0800 555 111.
The operation will run until Christmas, and the police are committed to ensuring that Swindon enjoys a peaceful and crime-free festive period.
