North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson ‘blown away’ by Steam Vaccination Centre

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson was left ‘blown away’ by the Steam COVID-19 vaccination centre following a visit last week.

More than 13.5million people in the UK have received their first dose of a vaccine, and nearly 1000 vaccinations are given every minute with 1 in 5 adults vaccinated with one dose so far. Across the country 91.4% of people aged 80 and above have received a vaccine, in addition to 95.9% of those aged between 75 and 79 and 77.2% of those aged between 70 and 74.

Vaccines have been delivered by 1,500 centres up across the country, with sports grounds, places of worship and museums offering space to house the vaccination centres – including Swindon’s Steam Museum.

The Steam vaccination centre has been led by the Wyvern Health Partnership & Brunel Health Group, and is delivering thousands of vaccinations a week. Earlier this week Justin received a tour of the centre to see how the process worked, and how the vaccination programme was progressing in Swindon.

During the visit Justin spoke to health care workers and volunteers, as well as people who had just received their vaccination.

Justin Tomlinson said: “I was blown away by the Steam vaccination centre, how well it was set up and how efficient it was. I can understand why it is so well regarded in the South West.

“I have spoken with a lot of residents who have also been thoroughly impressed with the experience. While at the centre I managed to speak to a few who had just received their vaccine. It was actually quite moving to see the pure joy and relief that was felt – for most it felt like we were finally beginning to venture out of a very dark tunnel.

“Health care workers have also played a vital role, not just in the vaccine roll out, but throughout the pandemic. I was heartened to see how grateful people were to them, with a number of people leaving gifts of chocolates and biscuits.

“The vaccination programme is vital for controlling COVID, and I want to thank everyone who has played a part in making the rollout in Swindon so efficient.

“Please, when it’s your turn – get vaccinated. You will be well looked after.”
