No trains today as rail union calls Boxing Day strike

Trains usually start running again on December 26th at a reduced rate after the Christmas Day shutdown, however there will be no trains running anywhere in the UK today after more strikes have been called by rail workers.

Network Rail had already told passengers to ‘only travel by train if absolutely necessary’ between the Christmas period through to 8th January.

With no trains running today it means people looking to attend the many Boxing Day sporting events, head to the airport for a winter break or simply trying to get home after spending Christmas Day with family will need to take to the roads.

The AA estimates that around 15.2 million cars are expected to be on the road on Boxing Day, a spokesman for the AA saying: ‘Traffic is likely to build around shopping centres as lots of people seek a bargain in the sales, meanwhile football fans will travel to see their teams.

‘There is scope for localised traffic congestion and more short trips, but traffic should be dispersed throughout the day as people take their time after Christmas Day.’

The next trains departing Swindon station are:

Patchway (for Bristol), Newport, Cardiff and stations through to Swansea – 27th December 10:16
Chippenham, Bath and Bristol Temple Meads – 27th December 10:31
Didcot Parkway, Reading and London Paddington – 27th December 10:40
