Swindon Theatres has announced a new partnership that will help secure the future of two long-running community initiatives supporting people living with dementia and their families.
Willowbrook View, a care home based in Wichelstowe, has become the new sponsor of the Memory Café at the Wyvern Theatre and the Memory Cinema programme at the Swindon Arts Centre.
The two projects provide welcoming spaces where people affected by dementia can meet others, access information, share experiences and enjoy activities in a supportive and relaxed environment. They have become established fixtures within Swindon’s dementia support network and are attended by people from across the town and wider Wiltshire area.
The new sponsorship will help Swindon Theatres continue running the sessions and could allow the programmes to reach even more people in the future.
Organisers say the initiatives play an important role in tackling social isolation and improving wellbeing for those living with memory loss, while also providing support for family members and carers.
For more than a decade, Swindon Theatres and the Trafalgar Entertainment Trust have delivered dementia-friendly activities and events designed to create opportunities for connection, creativity and social engagement.
Oli Webb, Creative Learning Manager at Swindon Theatres and Chair of the Swindon Dementia Action Alliance, said the partnership comes at a time when support services are under increasing pressure.
He said community projects such as the Memory Café have become increasingly important as funding for dementia support has reduced in recent years. Mr Webb added that the backing from Willowbrook View would help ensure existing services continue while creating opportunities to expand support for people at different stages of their dementia journey.
The Memory Café and Memory Cinema form part of a wider programme of accessible and inclusive activities offered by Swindon Theatres. Participants are able to enjoy entertainment, social interaction and access to support networks in an environment designed to be welcoming and understanding of the challenges associated with dementia.
Willowbrook View has also highlighted the wider benefits of the initiative, describing it as a valuable community resource for both individuals living with dementia and their families.
Andrew Winstanley, chief executive of Connaught Care Collection, which operates Willowbrook View, said memory loss can have a significant impact on individuals, families and communities. He said the organisation was proud to support a scheme that provides opportunities for people to connect, share experiences and access support.
He added that the programme had already helped hundreds of people across Swindon and that the care provider was pleased to contribute to its future.
The sponsorship reflects a growing focus on community partnerships aimed at supporting residents affected by dementia. According to national health organisations, creating opportunities for social interaction and community engagement can play an important role in helping people maintain confidence, independence and wellbeing following a dementia diagnosis.
With the new partnership now in place, organisers hope the Memory Café and Memory Cinema will continue to provide a valuable source of support and companionship for local people for years to come.
