As part of the infrastructure preparations for New Eastern Villages, Swindon Borough Council is working with Network Rail to deliver a new pedestrian/cycle bridge near South Marston. Network Rail needed to remove two pedestrian level crossings near South Marston to facilitate their overhead electrification scheme. As the proposed location for a replacement bridge was on a planned New Eastern Villages pedestrian/cycle route, Network Rail agreed to work with the Council to upgrade the bridge to cycle route standard.
As a first phase of construction, Network Rail will deliver a 3m wide footbridge by early February 2018. This project has been a satisfying example of two public bodies working together for the public benefit and has enabled significant cost savings for the Council.
