New Longleat Café to Welcome Walkers and Dogs at Shearwater

There’s a new reason for locals and visitors to head out for a stroll around Shearwater Lake next month, as work gets underway to breathe fresh life into the café nestled within the Longleat estate.

Following an earlier pledge by Longleat’s management team, the café will undergo a full refurbishment, transforming it into a welcoming stop for walkers, families, and four-legged companions alike. The reopening comes just as vital repair work on the lake and dam, designed to protect the historic site for future generations, nears completion.

The café promises to serve a selection of hot and cold snacks ideal for those on the move, along with dog treats and a variety of outdoor essentials. Whether it’s a quick coffee, a bite to eat, or something for the dog, the new menu is designed to cater for everyone enjoying the natural beauty of Shearwater.

Your Holiday Starts Now

Paul Jackson, Senior Operations Manager at Longleat, explained the estate’s vision for the revamped venue. “When the previous tenant of the café chose not to renew the lease for 2025, we made a firm commitment to ensure a new Longleat-themed food and retail offering would take its place,” he said.

“With the extensive lake and dam works drawing to a close, we’ve taken the opportunity to get the café ready in time for the summer holiday season. We know Shearwater is a favourite spot for walkers – with or without dogs – so we’re making sure the range of refreshments and essentials reflects that.”

In addition, Longleat members can expect the same perks they enjoy at the main estate and at Cheddar Gorge, with membership discounts available at the new café to add extra value to their visits.

Recruitment for the café’s new team has been progressing, with doors due to open on 16 July. The café will operate from Wednesday to Sunday, opening at 9am and closing at 5pm each day.

Shearwater Lake itself is steeped in history, having been created by the 1st Marquess of Bath during the 1790s. Its picturesque landscape was later enhanced by the renowned garden designer Humphry Repton. The recent dam repairs, carried out under the requirements of the Reservoir Act 1975, ensure the safety and preservation of this cherished landmark.

For those who enjoy peaceful woodland walks, scenic lake views, and a well-earned cup of tea, the new café promises to become a much-loved addition to the Shearwater experience.
