The Swindon Green Party has announced Cllr Tom Butcher as the new Leader of its group on Swindon Borough Council, with Cllr Ian Edwards appointed as Deputy Leader.
The announcement follows a visit from Zack Polanski, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, who welcomed the councillors into their new roles last week in Swindon.
The newly formed Green group has pledged to stand up for residents across Swindon and challenge the current Labour administration to deliver stronger action on housing, energy, and sustainability.
Cllr Tom Butcher, Councillor for St Margaret and South Marston Ward, said:
“My priorities as Leader of the Green Group on the council are to focus on what matters most to Swindon residents — the cost of living. This can be improved through a greater focus on housing and energy, and I will be holding the Labour administration to account, pushing them to be bolder in their aims.”
Cllr Ian Edwards, Councillor for Priory Vale Ward, added:
“The Green councillors will work as a team to build infrastructure that benefits everyone — raising the standard of living, investing in clean energy and water, and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.”
The Green Party group is now the third-largest group on Swindon Borough Council and aims to grow its presence further at the next local elections in May 2026, as the party continues to rise in national and local polls.
