New laws will make some e-cig products illegal and could lead to a prison sentence

Changes to the legislation around vaping and e-cigarettes are set to come into force on 20th May alongside the new tobacco rules as e-cigarettes are now regulated under the Tobacco Products Directive, affecting all countries in the EU.

The new vaping laws to be introduced are:

  • E-liquid bottles over 10ml in size will be illegal to sell, meaning large refills are no longer allowed. At the moment, 30ml is a common size, now vapers will have to buy several smaller bottles instead.
  • E-liquids cannot be stronger than 20mg per litre.
  • Vape tanks can’t be larger than 2ml in size so vapers who use larger devices may now find their favourite model is no longer legal. New labelling including safety warnings
  • There will also be new labelling including safety warnings on all bottles and devices.
  • All e-cigarettes and e-liquids will have to be registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products regulatory agency. This could put an end to cheap e-cig products, as they will have to go through proper certification and testing.
  • Caffeine and taurine (most commonly seen in energy drinks) are now banned from being added to e-liquids meaning no more energy boosting vapes.

Any seller who is not complying with the new laws by 20th May could face up to two years in prison.
