A moving new short film launched by Swindon Borough Council is shining a spotlight on the desperate need for more foster carers across the town.
Titled “The Run”, the film follows the story of Tom, an 11-year-old boy who runs – not just for sport, but to escape a turbulent home life and make it to school in time for breakfast. His life changes when he’s placed with a foster family who nurture his passion for running, leading to a powerful and uplifting finish at an athletics event.
Produced by ReelTwentyFive, an award-winning production company, The Run was made in collaboration with 90 councils across the UK and premiered this week at the Everyman Cinema in Birmingham. It now forms the centrepiece of a national campaign encouraging people to open their homes – and hearts – to children in care.
The message is particularly poignant for Swindon, where 310 children are currently in care. Almost half (42%) are placed outside the Borough, away from friends, schools, and familiar surroundings, due to a shortage of local foster families.
Councillor Paul Dixon, Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Care, said:
“The message of this project is very simple, but so important. We have children that need foster carers, and we need people to foster for the Council.
This film is a powerful reminder of the difference a stable, loving home can make to a child’s life. I urge anyone who thinks they can provide that home to reach out to our fostering team – they’ll offer all the advice and support you need.”
Swindon Borough Council provides full training, financial support, and ongoing guidance for foster carers. The team is especially keen to hear from those who can care for siblings, teenagers, or children with additional needs.
