New Adapted Bungalows in Moredon and Walcot Set to Transform Accessible Housing

The construction of fully adapted bungalows in Moredon and Walcot is advancing at pace, with significant progress on these much-needed homes.

The project, part of Swindon Borough Council’s commitment to improving accessible and sustainable housing, includes three new three-bedroom homes nearing completion in Ashley Close, Walcot, and eight two-bedroom properties taking shape in Ventnor Close, Moredon.

In Walcot, the three bungalows are on track for tenants to move in within two months. Meanwhile, Moredon’s development is well underway, with the first timber frame erected and the parking area now complete.

Designed with accessibility at their core, each home offers level access, off-road parking, fully adapted wet rooms, and wheelchair-friendly layouts. The emphasis on adaptable housing ensures that residents with disabilities or specific mobility needs can maintain their independence and enjoy a higher quality of life within their communities.

The properties are also built with sustainability in mind, equipped with air source heat pumps, solar panels, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems. This blend of energy-saving technology not only reduces environmental impact but also helps residents cut down on energy costs, aligning with Swindon Borough Council’s broader goals for a fairer, better, and greener Swindon.

Councillor Janine Howarth, Cabinet Member for Housing, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative: “The work to build these fully-adapted bungalows in Moredon and Walcot is about creating homes that empower residents to live fully and independently. Our designs meet physical needs while enriching quality of life, and our commitment to environmental sustainability makes this a meaningful project for our future.

“With features like solar panels and advanced ventilation systems, we’re tackling environmental goals alongside social needs. These homes embody our vision for a Fairer, Better, and Greener Swindon, and I’m excited to see them become part of our communities in the coming year.”
