Today, 17th September, marks National Fox Day, and Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire is celebrating the successful birth and hand rearing of two adorable Fennec Fox kits, Dot and Other. Born in April, the siblings are now approaching five months of age and have captured the hearts of visitors.
Due to complications following their birth, their mother, Zuri, was unable to care for them properly. The dedicated Animal Adventure team stepped in, providing round-the-clock care to ensure the kits thrived.

Catriona Moy, Animal Adventure Team Manager and one of the keepers, shared insights into the rearing process: “We’re now reintroducing the kits to their parents through mesh, allowing both groups to get accustomed to each other’s scents. They’ve already had nose-to-nose contact with their dad, Enzi, and it’s gone remarkably well.”
Visitors can often spot the lively sisters in their outdoor Fennec Fox area, where they enjoy exploring their habitat.
Fennec Foxes hold the title of the smallest fox species, boasting large ears that are crucial for their survival in the harsh conditions of the Sahara and North Africa. These distinctive ears help dissipate body heat, keeping the foxes cool, while their thick fur offers protection from nighttime chills and harsh daytime sun.
The successful hand rearing of Dot and Other stands as a testament to the commitment of Longleat’s team to animal welfare and conservation, especially on a day dedicated to celebrating these fascinating creatures.
